Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU) was established in 1954. Apart from being the first private medical university in Taiwan, the university has also become an important cradle for highly-skilled physicians and medical-related specialists.
KMU has all the strengths of a well-established university. There are wide ranges of high standard medical related courses, and the facilities in both basic and clinical research are varied and of good quality. The university has more than 6,500 students and 700 faculty members. Nowadays, the university which consists of 7 colleges and is affiliated with 4+1 hospital has become the leading medical institution in Southern Taiwan.
The University is located in the city center of Kaohsiung, the biggest city in southern Taiwan, which provides all kinds of attractions and excitements of a modern city life.
KMU and its affiliated hospitals offer not only comprehensive, humanitarian and internationally recognized healthcare to the people but also excellent training ground to medical personnel. The 1st and most important affiliated hospital of KMU, Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital (KMUH) passed consecutively the International Hospital accreditation in 2016 and in 2019 and was the first JCI qualified medical center in southern Taiwan. In 2022, the hospital was award “Smart Hospital” from the Joint Commission of Taiwan (JCT, certified by the International Society for Quality in Health Care Ltd). During 1998~2014, KMUH won bids from the Kaohsiung City Government for the management of Kaohsiung Municipal Hsiao-Kang Hospital (KMHK), Kaohsiung Municipal Ta-Tung Hospital (KMTTH) and Kaohsiung Municipal Ci-jin Hospital (KMCH). The plan of the fifth affiliated hospital, Kaohsiung Medical University Gang-Shan Hospital was approved by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and will be in operation from 2023.
KMU has exceptional performance in the THE Impact Rankings 2021, placing 3rd in Taiwan, and 1st among private universities in Taiwan. KMU also achieved excellent results in SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) performance placing 10th globally and 1st in Taiwan. In the 2022 THE Subject Rankings and QS Ranking by subject, KMU ranked respectively top 400 in Clinical and Health and top 61 (top 3 in Taiwan) in Nursing. Following the international recognition of outstanding efforts from the faculty and students on sustainable development, KMU has realized its vision of "becoming a world-class international medical university that promotes human health and well-being".
KMU is a fully-developed medical university that consists of 7 Colleges, which are College of Medicine, College of Dental Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Nursing, College of Health Sciences, College of Life Sciences, and College of Humanities and Social sciences. KMU is also proud to be one of the world's leading research-intensive universities: the faculty across from different Colleges was selected as the “World’s Top 2% Scientists 2020” according to the search from Stanford University. Students are encouraged to engage with the faculty and get involved in research with the opportunities of research funding, from their freshman year to graduated study.
